Andy joined Black Isle in 2013 as a leadership and communication facilitator and coach. His core expertise is in helping people be more compelling when they lead, communicate and innovate. He develops network leaders, advises on how to bring about culture change and helps teams come up with solutions to the biggest creative challenges they face. Andy is excellent at helping people to turn good intentions into impactful action. His style is to mix fun with a high degree of challenge.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
When I was growing up the manager of my football team told me to spend a whole season playing with my ‘wrong’ foot. I ignored him. This was the worse decision of my life … who knows where I would have been now if I had taken his advice?! The moral of the story is do something today that your future self will thank you for!
Which book changed your life?
The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris. In particular, his concept of bringing forward your retirement. Why spend your whole life waiting to retire and enjoy life, when you can plan to work all of your living years, bring forward that ‘retirement’ time and sprinkle some of it into every year!
Give one characteristic that you feel every leader should have?
Compassion. You need it, your team needs it, your clients need it, your business needs it … the world needs it!
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken?
Quitting my career in Banking (against the advice of everyone around me) and disappearing off to sit in a hammock in El Salvador for a year, to be able to contemplate life and what was going to be next for me.
What is the most meaningful part of your job?
When a light switches on in someone and you can see that this is going to make them take more responsibility, communicate with greater clarity and be a better human being.
