Certain personalities suit certain companies and roles more than others. Smart employment decisions are made by considering many factors, including personality.

Personality assessment has a reputation problem. It is not a regulated industry and has many charlatans peddling flimsy tools. Certain providers have created tools that predict behaviour more reliably than interviews. Good assessment tools detect regularities in people’s thinking and behaviour – they pick up things you can’t see from thin slices of behaviour.

Our experience is that more businesses are using them, but for different reasons. Our clients use us for the stricter due diligence required for senior roles. Others because they are scaling fast and want consistency and control, and others because it reduces instances of bias or halo effect. Frankly, it’s about risk management. Data crunching and research has advanced considerably in the last 10 years – hopefully opinions catch up with actual capability soon.
